US Imposes Sanctions on Chinese Firms for Making Weapons for Russia’s War in Ukraine

The United States has imposed sanctions on two Chinese companies, Xiamen Limbach Aircraft Engine Co., Ltd., and Redlepus Vector Industry Shenzhen Co Ltd (Redlepus), for their role in designing and producing long-range attack drones for Russia. These drones, part of the Garpiya series, have been used to destroy critical infrastructure and result in mass casualties in Ukraine.

The sanctions target the direct involvement of these Chinese entities in producing and shipping components that are unmistakably part of Russia’s war against Ukraine. This marks the first instance where U.S. sanctions have been imposed directly on Chinese firms for manufacturing complete weapon systems in collaboration with Russian firms.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that the Garpiya series, designed and produced in China in collaboration with Russian defense firms, has been used to destroy critical infrastructure and result in mass casualties during the ongoing war in Ukraine.

China has consistently denied providing military supplies to Russia, asserting that it exercises stringent controls over such exports. However, the U.S. has accused China of providing material support to Russia’s military-industrial base, and the latest sanctions aim to disrupt these activities.
