Rep Hank Johnson Argues SCOTUS Term Limits are Path Forward for Removing ‘Corrupt’ Justices

Georgia Democrat Rep. Hank Johnson has been a strong proponent of Supreme Court reform, advocating for term limits to eliminate the possibility of long-term “rot and decay” on the high court. He argues that term limits are necessary to prevent justices from becoming unaccountable and doing whatever they want due to their lifetime tenure.

Johnson introduced the Supreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization Act (TERM Act), which would impose 18-year term limits on justices. He believes this reform is crucial to prevent corporate corruption and ensure that justices are not beholden to right-wing forces.

President Biden and Vice President Harris have also expressed support for term limits and ethics reforms for the Supreme Court. Biden’s statement in late July called for Congress to approve term limits, and Harris echoed his sentiments, highlighting the crisis of confidence facing the Supreme Court.

The momentum for Supreme Court term limits continues to grow, with over 60 co-sponsors of the TERM Act, including Representatives Jim Clyburn and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This bipartisan support underscores the broad popularity of term limits among voters, who see them as a necessary step to ensure the Court remains representative of American values.
