North Korea Expands List of Crimes Punishable by Death: Report
North Korea has expanded its list of crimes punishable by death from 11 to 16, according to recent reports. The regime led by Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un has made these changes through revisions of its criminal law, as indicated by the Yonhap News Agency.
The newly added offenses include acts of anti-state propaganda, unlawful manufacturing, and the unauthorized use of weaponry. These legal changes were formalized through several amendments made between May 2022 and December 2023, as reported by the Korea Institute for National Unification (KINU).
The tightening of the legal framework is aimed at reinforcing the Kim regime’s control over the populace, particularly through its ongoing monopoly on economic activities and military power. Earlier this month, North Korea announced its intentions to enhance its weapons development and bolster its nuclear capabilities, with Kim Jong Un emphasizing the need for a stronger nuclear force to safeguard state security.
