Ohio Senator JD Vance was widely praised for his performance in the recent vice presidential debate, with many commentators noting that he significantly outshone Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Vance’s calm and poised demeanor, coupled with his control of the facts, were highlighted as key factors in his success. In contrast, Governor Walz was criticized for his nervousness and series of mistakes, which were seen as disqualifying.
Newt Gingrich, in an opinion piece, described Vance as a “star” who had “won a substantial triumph” and vindicated President Donald Trump’s early selection of him as a running mate. Gingrich noted that Vance’s performance could potentially make him a major figure in American politics for decades to come, similar to Richard Nixon’s long-standing influence.
The debate was widely covered, with pollster Frank Luntz reporting that his focus group voted 12 to 2 in favor of Vance. Other commentators, including Glenn Greenwald and Ross Douthat, also praised Vance’s performance, while criticizing Walz’s handling of the debate.
Donald Trump Jr. was also seen as a winner from the debate, having strongly backed Vance as a running mate and seeing his choice validated by Vance’s strong performance. The Trump-Vance campaign collected numerous endorsements from journalists and public figures who agreed that Vance had trounced Walz.
