More than 50% of Puerto Rico began the New Year in the dark after a massive outage. 30% of customers are still without power

On January 1, 2025, a widespread power outage affected over 1.3 million residents in Puerto Rico, leaving nearly 50% of the island without electricity. The blackout, attributed to an underground line malfunction, was reported by Luma Energy, the company responsible for electricity transmission and distribution in Puerto Rico. As of Tuesday night, power had been restored to over 700,000 residents and critical infrastructure, but 30% of customers remained without power. The outage has intensified long-standing frustrations about Puerto Rico’s unreliable power grid, which was significantly damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017. Federal assistance has been offered to expedite power restoration, and a review of Luma’s performance is being considered[2][4][5].
