Lebanon Accuses Israel of ‘Genocide’ After Strikes
Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister, Najib Mikati, has called Israel’s wave of air strikes an act of genocide, declaring: “The continued Israeli aggression on Lebanon is a war of genocide in every sense of the word, and its goal is to destroy Lebanese villages!”
Since Monday, Israeli airstrikes have killed over 600 individuals, including numerous children, in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley. The Lebanese government has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following the latest Israeli strike in Beirut, accusing Israel of carrying out acts “akin to genocide” on Lebanese soil.
Hezbollah has fired a barrage of rockets into northern Israel, which have been mostly intercepted and caused no casualties. The situation remains dire, with hundreds killed and many more displaced as Israel maintains its airstrikes on the Bekaa Valley and southern regions throughout the night.
Global leaders, including the United States and European Union, have urged for an immediate 21-day ceasefire to facilitate negotiations between Israel and Hezbollah, aiming to avert the risk of a full-scale war in the region.
