Israel Has Given No Assurances It Won’t Target Iran’s Nuclear Facilities
A senior official from the US State Department informed CNN on Friday that Israel has not provided any guarantees to the Biden administration that it will refrain from targeting Iran’s nuclear installations in response to the recent Iranian ballistic missile attacks. The official remarked that it remains “extremely difficult to determine” whether Israel might choose to retaliate on the anniversary of the Hamas assaults on October 7.
When questioned by CNN about whether Israel has assured the United States that it will avoid striking Iran’s nuclear facilities, the official stated, “We hope and expect to see a combination of wisdom and strength, but as you know, there are no guarantees.”
Earlier this week, President Joe Biden expressed that the United States would not endorse any Israeli actions aimed at Iran’s nuclear program. Additionally, US officials remain uncertain about the timing of Israel’s response or when it will be implemented.
In response to inquiries about the possibility of Israel avenging the Hamas attack on its one-year anniversary, the official conveyed, “It is really hard to tell.” They further suggested that Israel might prefer to steer clear of any actions on that significant date, indicating that if there were to be any response, it would likely occur either before or after that day to honor its solemnity and to avoid overshadowing its significance.
The US has been striving for nearly a year to avert the escalation of the conflict into a larger war, and thus far, they have been successful, according to the official. They emphasized that the situation is currently “on the edge.”
