Recent Developments in Israel-Lebanon Conflict
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have begun a “limited ground operation” in southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah fighters and infrastructure in several villages near the border. This operation aims to eliminate immediate threats from Lebanese communities along the border, including Hezbollah’s capacity to infiltrate northern Israel.
President Joe Biden has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to abandon plans for a wider ground invasion, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire to prevent further escalation. The U.S. Defense Secretary, Lloyd Austin, has also engaged with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to discuss security developments and Israeli military operations, with a focus on dismantling attack infrastructure along the border.
Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Sheikh Naim Qassem, has stated that the group is ready for any possibility of a ground invasion and will continue to support Gaza and defend Lebanon despite recent losses and attacks. The UK Foreign Minister, David Lammy, has called for an immediate ceasefire and urged British citizens in Lebanon to leave the country immediately.
