Kirill Shevchenko Expelled from Competition for Alleged Cheating

Romanian chess grandmaster Kirill Shevchenko, ranked 69th in the world, has been expelled from the Spanish Team Championship after being accused of using a mobile phone during his games. The allegations surfaced when Shevchenko’s unusual behavior, including frequent visits to the restroom, raised suspicions among his opponents and the organizing committee. A phone was found in the toilet cubicle with a handwritten note that matched Shevchenko’s handwriting, leading to his disqualification. The Spanish Chess Federation has modified Shevchenko’s results from the first two rounds to count as forfeits and losses, and the case is currently under investigation by the FIDE Ethics Commission.
