Basketball Star Dikembe Mutombo Dies at 58

Dikembe Mutombo, a revered figure in basketball and a Hall of Famer, passed away on Monday at the age of 58 due to brain cancer, as reported by the NBA. Renowned for his exceptional shot-blocking abilities and his iconic finger wave that followed denied shots, Mutombo left an indelible mark on the sport.

He was honored with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015, boasting eight NBA All-Star selections and earning the Defensive Player of the Year title four times. Throughout his 18-year career, he showcased remarkable defensive skills, leading the league in blocks for five straight seasons and retiring as the second all-time leader in blocked shots.

Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, 7-foot-2 Mutombo arrived at Georgetown University in Washington in 1987 under an academic scholarship. His basketball career took off during his sophomore year when he joined the university’s team, eventually leading to his selection as the fourth overall pick in the 1991 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Mutombo was also celebrated for his philanthropic efforts. In 1997, just two years prior to his retirement from professional basketball, he founded the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, focusing on enhancing education and living standards in the DRC. In 2022, the NBA disclosed that Mutombo was undergoing treatment for a brain tumor in Atlanta. He passed away surrounded by family members, as confirmed by the league.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed his condolences, stating, “Dikembe Mutombo was truly larger than life. He was among the most formidable shot blockers and defensive players in NBA history. Off the court, he dedicated himself to helping others.” Silver further noted that Mutombo was the perfect choice to be the NBA’s first Global Ambassador, highlighting his humanitarian spirit and commitment to using basketball as a force for good in his homeland and across Africa.
