A US Airport Made a ‘Confusing’ Name Change. Here’s How It’s Going
The Oakland International Airport (OAK) recently changed its name to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport, causing significant confusion among travelers. This change was approved by the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners in May 2024, despite protests from San Francisco authorities.
San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu has filed a federal trademark infringement lawsuit against Oakland, arguing that the new name infringes on the trademark of San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Chiu’s office has reported instances of traveler confusion, including passengers arriving at the wrong airport and ride share services directing travelers to the incorrect location.
SFO officials have also documented several cases of passenger confusion, with at least six incidents logged between June 18 and July 1. These incidents include passengers arriving at SFO with boarding passes for flights that actually depart from OAK.
The Port of Oakland has defended the name change, stating that it aims to increase passengers’ awareness of OAK’s geographic location and attract more nonstop destinations. However, the legal battle continues, with San Francisco seeking a preliminary injunction to halt the use of the new name.
