Cardinal Dolan ‘Disappointed’ by Harris Skipping Al Smith Dinner
Cardinal Timothy Dolan expressed his disappointment over Vice President Kamala Harris’ decision to skip the 79th annual Al Smith charity dinner, which is set to take place on October 17, 2024. The event, hosted by the Archdiocese of New York, typically features both presidential candidates and aims to promote unity and charity.
Cardinal Dolan noted that Harris’ absence is a surprise, as it has been 40 years since a candidate declined the invitation, with Walter Mondale being the last one to do so in 1984. He also mentioned that Harris’ schedulers might be the ones advising her to skip the event, and he still holds out hope that she might change her mind.
Despite the disappointment, the event is expected to proceed with former President Donald Trump attending, and Catholic comedian Jim Gaffigan serving as the master of ceremonies. The dinner aims to raise millions of dollars for charitable organizations associated with the Archdiocese of New York.
