Serena Williams Has Surgery to Remove Cyst Size of ‘a Small Grapefruit’ from Her Neck

Serena Williams, the retired tennis legend, recently underwent surgery to remove a benign branchial cyst from her neck. The cyst was described as being the size of a small grapefruit. Williams, who is 43, initially discovered the lump in May and opted against surgery initially, but as it continued to grow, further action was required.

After undergoing an MRI scan and additional examinations, including a biopsy that ruled out cancer, her medical team advised her to proceed with the surgery to prevent potential infection or leakage. Williams shared a video from her hospital bed, expressing her gratitude and relief that everything is fine now.

She is still recovering but getting better, emphasizing that “health always comes first.” This recent health scare comes after her transition away from professional tennis, where she secured 23 Grand Slam singles titles and 14 doubles titles alongside her sister Venus, and earned four Olympic gold medals.
