“I Want to Be Here for the Rest of My Life”: Why Jason Bennett Swapped San Francisco for Colombia

Why this man swapped San Francisco for Colombia

Jason Bennett, a senior marketing executive from San Francisco, decided to relocate to Colombia in 2018. Despite his initial intention to stay in San Francisco and ascend the corporate hierarchy, Bennett developed a deep affection for Medellín, a city in Colombia. He found the city’s energy, food, weather, and clean metro system appealing, and the locals’ resilience and warmth inspired him.

Bennett resigned from his position at Gap Inc. and launched his own marketing firm. He traveled to Lisbon, Portugal, and Cartagena, Colombia, before settling in Medellín. He felt an immediate sense of belonging due to the warmth and kindness of the local people.

Bennett now operates two businesses from Medellín and plans to apply for Colombian citizenship in the future. He holds a residency visa that he renews every five years and continues to pay taxes to the US government. His parents and sister have visited him in Colombia, and he hopes to explore more of the country soon.
