Former President Donald Trump declared himself the “father of IVF” during a Fox News town hall in Georgia, aimed at women’s issues. Despite his conservative Supreme Court majority causing upheaval in reproductive healthcare, Trump emphasized his commitment to in vitro fertilization (IVF). He stated, “We truly are the party for IVF,” asserting that Democrats have attempted to undermine their position on the matter.
Trump’s remarks came as a response to the recent ruling in Alabama, which has enraged advocates for reproductive rights. The ruling could deter doctors from providing IVF services and potentially increase costs. Trump suggested he would implement a federal policy regarding reproductive health, distancing himself from the Alabama ruling despite its implications.
Senate Democrats have introduced legislation this year to ensure nationwide access to IVF, which Republicans have resisted. Trump also criticized certain states for imposing what he described as overly stringent abortion restrictions, stating that these laws would be “redone” through a vote by the people.
Trump’s stance on IVF has been inconsistent, often providing perplexing and sometimes contradictory statements about his views on abortion. His running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, acknowledged the challenges the GOP faces on this topic, suggesting that the party needs to advocate for new legislation to assist struggling parents.
Polling indicates that approximately two-thirds of Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court’s decision on this matter, highlighting the contentious nature of reproductive rights in the election.
