Eight Monkeys Found Dead at Hong Kong Zoo, Government Says

A section of Hong Kong’s oldest zoo, the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, was closed on Monday after eight monkeys, including three from a critically endangered species, were found dead. The deceased monkeys included a De Brazza’s monkey, one common squirrel monkey, three cotton-top tamarins, and three white-faced sakis.

Necropsy and laboratory tests have been arranged to determine the cause of death. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) is investigating the incident and has liaised with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. The Mammals Section of the zoo was closed for disinfection and cleaning works, while other facilities remained open.

The zoo, which opened to the public in 1871, is home to about 158 birds, 93 mammals, and 21 reptiles, living in about 40 enclosures. The LCSD will closely monitor the health conditions of other animals during this period.
