Top House Committee Launches Probe into Biden Admin ‘Priorities’ on FEMA Hurricane Relief, Migrant Spending

Republicans on the House Homeland Security Committee are investigating the Department of Homeland Security’s “priorities” for its request for funding from Congress, amid an ongoing controversy over spending on illegal migrants and disaster relief. The committee is scrutinizing DHS’s prioritization of its ability to adequately respond to natural disasters, particularly in light of recent hurricanes in North Carolina and Florida.

The administration has urged Congress to pass a supplemental spending bill, emphasizing that while FEMA has enough funds for immediate needs, stable funding is necessary for a multibillion-dollar, multiyear recovery effort. The investigation comes as conservatives have pointed to grants administered by FEMA for non-profits and local communities receiving illegal immigrants during the historic border crisis, with some claiming that disaster money has been taken and used on migrants. However, DHS has repeatedly pushed back against these claims, stating that the funding for migrants is congressionally appropriated and separate from the Disaster Relief Fund.
