Game of Thrones’ Dragon-Forged Iron Throne Fetches Nearly $1.5 Million at Auction

The iconic Iron Throne from the HBO series “Game of Thrones” was sold for nearly $1.5 million at an auction held by Heritage Auctions in Dallas. The event, which took place from Thursday to Saturday, generated a total of $21.1 million from over 4,500 bidders. The Iron Throne, a replica made of plastic and molded from the original screen-used version, was enhanced with metallic paint and adorned with jewels. It was the standout item of the auction, symbolizing the relentless battle for power that defined the narrative of the series.

In addition to the highly sought-after Iron Throne, over 30 other lots fetched six-figure sums. Jon Snow’s sword, Longclaw, sold for $400,000, and his Night’s Watch attire went for $337,500. The gray suede outfit worn by Daenerys Targaryen brought in $112,500, while the red velvet gown worn by Cersei Lannister in her final scene fetched $137,500. Armor sets, including those worn by Jaime Lannister and Gregor ‘The Mountain’ Clegane, also sold for significant amounts, with Jaime’s black leather armor ensemble selling for $275,000 and his Kingsguard armor going for $212,500.

The auction marked Heritage’s second-best entertainment event, just shy of the record set by a Debbie Reynolds sale in 2011. Joe Maddalena, Executive Vice President of Heritage, expressed his confidence in the auction’s appeal, noting that the items were “remarkable treasures created by Emmy-winning costume designers and prop artisans” that captured the essence of “Game of Thrones” magic.

Jay Roewe, HBO’s senior vice president of global incentives and production planning, stated that the sale reflects the enduring legacy of the series five years after its conclusion. He noted that “Game of Thrones” was a defining moment in high-end television and a significant moment for HBO, with its influence still felt today.
