Soros-linked dark money group props up independent candidate in key Senate race

An independent candidate in Nebraska’s Senate race has managed to make the election more competitive, with millions of outside money being poured into the campaign. The candidate, Dan Osborn, is gaining traction against two-term Republican Senator Deb Fischer. Osborn has received significant funding from a Soros-linked dark money group, the Sixteen Thirty Fund, which has provided $1.4 million in advertising through the super PAC Retire Career Politicians.

The Sixteen Thirty Fund is operated by Arabella Advisers, a left-wing Washington, D.C., political consulting firm. The fund has received over $75 million from the Open Society Foundations, a group founded by George Soros, between 2016 and 2022. This influx of money has helped Osborn present a unique blend of populist economic perspectives and social conservatism, resonating with voters in Nebraska.

Osborn’s campaign has been marked by controversy, with Republicans labeling him as a “Bernie Sanders Democrat” who advocates for Social Security benefits for undocumented immigrants. Despite these allegations, Osborn has maintained his independence from the Democratic Party, refusing endorsements from any political figure or party.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee has responded by investing nearly $500,000 in TV and digital advertisements targeting Osborn, labeling him a “Democrat in Disguise”. The NRSC Communications Director, Mike Berg, has criticized Osborn’s stance on immigration and social issues, stating that his policies do not align with Nebraska values.
