Dad Walks 17 Miles Through Hurricane Devastation to Daughter’s Wedding
David Jones, a 64-year-old father, embarked on a 17-mile journey through the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene to attend his daughter’s wedding in Johnson City, Tennessee. Despite the catastrophic damage and washed-out roads, Jones persevered, walking through debris and quicksand-like mud to reach his destination.
Jones’ determination was driven by his desire to walk his daughter down the aisle, a moment he considered essential. He began his journey after his car was diverted and he was unable to drive further. With no cell phone service or internet, he had no idea of the extent of the devastation ahead. However, he continued, grabbing his backpack and essentials, and eventually found assistance from a bulldozer operator who helped him navigate the final stretch.
Jones’ journey was not only physically challenging but also emotionally significant. He decided not to tell his daughter about his adventure until after the wedding, wanting to keep her focus on the special day. It was during the reception that he revealed his journey, presenting the reflector he carried with him as a symbol of his determination.
