WWII Bomb Explodes at Japanese Airport
A 500-pound American bomb from World War II exploded at Miyazaki Airport in southwest Japan on Wednesday, causing over 80 flight cancellations but no injuries. The bomb, which had been buried at the airport, detonated near the taxiway, leaving a crater 23 feet wide and more than three feet deep. The airport is expected to resume operations on Thursday. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of unexploded ordnance in Japan, with officials estimating up to 2,000 tons of such ordnance on the island of Okinawa alone.
