Rep. Matt Gaetz Introduces Bill to Cut Off Federal Aid to Organizations Helping Illegal Immigrants
Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., has introduced a bill known as the BARRIER Act, which aims to cut off federal assistance to any organization providing aid to illegal immigrants crossing the U.S. border. The bill, which Gaetz is expected to introduce on October 3, 2024, targets nonprofit groups that assist illegal immigrants in entering and staying in the U.S. illegally.
Gaetz stated that NGOs and nonprofits serve as “foot soldiers for the Biden-Harris administration’s mass-migration policies” by helping illegal aliens cross the border and remain in the U.S. for years after illegally entering the country. The BARRIER Act would strip these organizations of their federal funding, which can be used to assist those who break federal law.
The bill is co-sponsored by several other Republican representatives, including Lauren Boebert, Mary Miller, Eric Burlison, Randy Weber, Troy Nehls, Andy Ogles, and Andy Biggs. If enacted, immigration groups like the National Immigration Law Center, American Immigration Council, and CASA would likely lose their federal grants.
