Recent News: IDF Strikes School in Gaza

On September 21, 2024, an Israeli airstrike on a school in Gaza City resulted in the deaths of at least 22 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry. The strike targeted a Hamas command hub situated at the al-Falah school, which was being used to shelter displaced individuals. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas was utilizing the facility to plan and execute terrorist operations against IDF personnel and the State of Israel.

The IDF stated that it implemented measures to reduce the likelihood of civilian casualties, including employing precision munitions and conducting aerial reconnaissance. However, Hamas refuted claims of using schools and other civilian locations for military operations.

The incident marked the fifth time the al-Jaouni school, another school in Gaza, had been attacked since October 7, 2023, with six UNRWA staff members killed in a previous strike. The ongoing conflict has resulted in over 41,000 Palestinian fatalities and 95,125 injuries, with millions displaced and facing severe food shortages and disease outbreaks.
