Hamas Praises Iran for Attack on Israel to Avenge Three Men
Hamas has praised Iran’s missile attack on Israel, saying it was a “heroic” attempt to avenge the deaths of three men. The attack was in response to Israel’s campaign against Tehran’s Hezbollah allies in Lebanon and the assassination of former Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in July 2024.
The three men whose deaths Hamas is avenging include:
– Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Nasrallah was known for his leadership and was considered a powerful figure in Hezbollah, which is aligned with Iran. He was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut.
– Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent member of Hamas who was widely considered the group’s overall leader until his reported death in July 2024. He was less hardline and militaristic than Yahya Sinwar, who is the head of Hamas inside Gaza.
– Iranian Brigadier General Abbas Nilforoushan, a prominent general in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard who served as the deputy commander for operations. He died in the same Israeli airstrike that killed Nasrallah in Beirut.
Iran has confirmed it fired a barrage of missiles at Israel on Tuesday, saying it did so in “self-defence.” Israel has responded by vowing a “painful response” against its enemy, and the conflict continues to escalate with both sides engaging in military actions.
