Immediately reconvene’: Scott urges Schumer to recall Senate amid Helene’s devastation

Sen. Rick Scott is calling on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to “immediately reconvene” the Senate to consider additional FEMA funding in the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastation. Scott emphasized that the response and recovery from the storm demand the full and immediate support of government at every level to get families and businesses back to normal.

Scott has been in constant contact with federal officials, local leaders, law enforcement, and emergency management officials in communities impacted by the storm. He has urged those in need of assistance with federal agencies like FEMA and the SBA to contact his office.

The calls for an emergency special session to pass supplemental disaster relief legislation have been echoed by Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz, who argued that Congress should not have left town for recess without passing some sort of legislation to ensure FEMA was properly funded.

President Joe Biden has suggested that he “may have to request” Congress to return to pass disaster relief legislation, but a final decision has not been made. The Senate is not expected to return until after the election on November 12, but there is a growing push for an emergency session to address the urgent needs of communities affected by Hurricane Helene.
