Australian National Broadcaster Finds ‘Systemic’ Racism in Workplace

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has released an internal review that found “systemic” racism within its ranks, prompting an apology from the managing director to all past and present employees.

The review, titled ‘Listen Loudly, Act Strongly,’ was led by Indigenous lawyer Dr. Terri Janke and involved interviews with 120 current and former ABC staff. The report confirmed the presence of “systemic” racism within the ABC, revealing that staff members also endure racism from outside sources.

Staff reported experiencing both overt racism, including racial insults and derogatory remarks, and more subtle forms of racism that hindered their career advancement and created an unwelcoming cultural environment. Some individuals expressed that they were overlooked for opportunities because they were perceived as having been hired to fulfill diversity quotas.

The review proposed 15 recommendations, urging the broadcaster to adopt a “proactively anti-racist” stance and to conduct salary audits for Indigenous and minority staff members. The ABC has accepted all recommendations in principle and appointed the former race discrimination commissioner to continue the review’s work.

Managing Director David Anderson extended his apology to current and former employees, stating, “For anyone who believes it is acceptable to exhibit or engage in racist conduct, or who thinks they can demean others based on their identity, we will identify you and remove you from this organization.” He emphasized the need for a workplace that prioritizes respect and expects it from all employees.
