Harris-Trump Cash Dash: Former President Looks to Flip Script with Fundraising Swing in Oil Country
Former President Trump is trailing Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 fundraising race, but he is aiming to narrow the gap with a series of fundraising events in Texas, a state that has historically been a significant source of funds for Republican presidential candidates. Trump will headline a luncheon in Midland, Texas, followed by a cocktail reception in Houston, and another fundraiser in Dallas during his Texas swing.
Despite his efforts, the latest figures from the Federal Election Commission show that Harris’s campaign has hauled in nearly $190 million in August, more than quadrupling the $44.5 million that Trump’s team reported for the same period. Harris’s campaign entered September with $235 million cash on hand, significantly ahead of Trump’s $135 million.
Trump’s fundraising deficit is not new; he also raised less than 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton during his White House victory and less than President Biden in previous cycles. The Democrats’ small-dollar fundraising machine has been particularly effective, with Trump acknowledging that while he excels at grassroots fundraising, the Democrats have a more robust online fundraising platform.
